How many times does your stomach hurt, you feel bloated, tired, fatigued or even get a sudden reaction to a food that you always eat, but do not know what it is? Or can’t seem to lose from the stomach area?

O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibât [all kinds of Halal foods which Allâh has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits, etc.] and do righteous deeds. Verily! I am Well-Acquainted with what you do. Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:51

Research has repeatedly highlighted the profound advantages of maintaining a food journal. Beyond being a mere log of what we eat, it serves as a crucial tool in understanding the intricate relationship between our dietary choices, mental and physical health, and overall mood.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that tracking our food intake allows us to recognize the effects various foods have on our body and mind. It's not solely about calorie counting or allowing occasional "cheat days," but rather about fostering an awareness of how the foods we consume act as fuel and nourishment for our bodies.

In a comprehensive study conducted by nutritional scientists, participants who maintained detailed food journals exhibited a remarkable improvement in their overall eating habits. By consistently recording their meals, snacks, and beverages, individuals developed an increased sense of mindfulness regarding their dietary choices. This mindfulness, in turn, led to a significant shift towards healthier eating patterns. Participants reported increased awareness of portion sizes, a deeper understanding of nutritional values, and an enhanced ability to make informed food decisions.

Furthermore, this study revealed that those who diligently kept food journals experienced tangible benefits in their physical and mental well-being. They reported reduced instances of cravings for unhealthy, processed foods and a noticeable increase in energy levels throughout the day. Additionally, participants noted improvements in their mood and mental clarity, emphasising how mindful eating positively impacts not just the body but also mental health. These findings underline the pivotal role a food journal plays in creating a space for individuals to become more attuned to their dietary choices and subsequently make more conscious decisions that prioritise nourishment and well-being over convenience.
